The catalogue opens a series of publications dedicated to Russian and Western Europe early printed books. A small collection of sixteenth-seventeenth century. Cyrillic edition from the State Hermitage Research Library and Department of the History of Russian Culture has now been bibliographically described and characterized from the point of view of its museum value: special attention has been paid to the volumes’ state of preservation and detail of their provenance. Binding technologies have been studied, and materials and techniques of making different elements of the book block identified. A special article deals with the little-studied ornamental book covers and bindings (“oklads”) of the 16th-19th centuries. The appendix contains descriptions of stamping tools used in the making of Cyrillic book bindings.
This publication is intended for art critics and historians, librarians, book conservators, designers,  bibliophiles and everyone who is interested in the history of printing.
