Ivan Fedorovich Barchevsky (1851-1948) was the first professional photographer to engage mainly with architectural subjects. He was inspired by Russian traditional culture to become an «archeological» researcher, and over the course of several decades Barchevskiy meticulously and sequentially photographed the monuments of 12th-19th-century Russian architecture, as well as decorative art objects in Moscow, Petersburg, Novgorod, Pskov, Vladimir, Suzdal, Yaroslavl, Vologda, Uglich, Tver, and so on. To this day, Barchevsky’s photography is used by restorers and architects. His gaze, techniques, and, principles of recording and cataloguing buildings and objects continue to remain relevant in contemporary photographic practices.
