Exhibition catalog. Vasily Vereshchagin (1842-1904) was an outstanding Russian artist, historian, ethnographer, writer, philosopher, traveler and military officer. The gallery will open a comprehensive retrospective of the best paintings and graphic works of the master.
The purpose of the exhibition is to show the unique personality of the artist to the public, to present him as an artist, military and pacifist, passionate researcher of new geographical landscapes, countries and people, a visionary who managed to transform martial painting as a genre in a radical way. The exhibition raises one of the important theoretical issues that are relevant today - it reflects the boundaries of realism, taking the example of Vereshchagin.
The works will be represented by series dedicated to the military expeditions and travels of the artist: the Turkestan, Balkan, Indian series "Russian North", the Japanese series.
